Ayurvedic enemas play an extremely important role in re-establishing balance to the body. There are different types of enemas, usually consisting of herbal decoctions or herbal oil or a combination of both. They are either strengthening and lubricating or cleansing by nature.

Cleansing enemas are retained for as long as possible (usually 5-10min), while oil enemas can stay in the body for absorption. Vasti is the best treatment to balance vata. Kati Basti is one of the treatments from a group called external oleation therapies (Snehana). In this particular treatment, medicinal oil is heated and held in place by a ring of dough that is placed around a specific area of the patient’s back. It is used mainly for disorders of the lumbar/sacral region, including slipped disc, sciatica or other spinal related problems and can give quick pain relief.

Pizhychil means “squeezing” or “pouring”. In this type of treatment, warm and medicated oil is poured continuously onto the patient’s body or specific areas (but not the head) from pitchers. In olden times, people used cotton cloths to do this – thus the word “squeezing”. Pizhichil is used in rheumatic diseases, arthritis and all nervous disorders like paralysis, hemiplegia, Parkinson’s disease. It relieves body pain and muscle spasms, speeds up the healing of fractured bones, increases immunity, improves skin complexion, has anti-aging properties, is soothing, relaxing and rejuvenating.

The Chakra Basti is performed by filling the hot medicated oil or ghee in this dam either by gently pouring or squeezed in with cotton gauze. When the oil or ghee cools down it is squeezed out and replaced with more warm ones. The procedure does local oleation and local sudation simultaneously.

The Process

Timing

Ayurvedic therapies are done in succession each spanning 60-90 minutes, at different intervals, usually 3, 7 or 14 sessions.
